{"id":3133,"date":"2016-07-11T16:48:09","date_gmt":"2016-07-11T20:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.localhost:10003\/?p=3133"},"modified":"2016-07-11T16:48:09","modified_gmt":"2016-07-11T20:48:09","slug":"post-emergence-options-controlling-waterhemp-soybeans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montysplantfood.com\/zh\/post-emergence-options-controlling-waterhemp-soybeans\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-emergence options for controlling waterhemp in soybeans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">June 16, 2016\u00a0| Posted in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.no-tillfarmer.com\/topics\/82-crop-protection\">Crop Protection<br \/>\n<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u8d44\u6599\u6765\u6e90\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bulletin.ipm.illinois.edu\/?p=3652\">University of Illinois Extension<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>By Aaron Hager, Extension Weed Scientist<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Waterhemp continues to be one of the most widespread and troublesome broadleaf weed species with which farmers must contend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Factors related to the species\u2019 biology, such as prolonged germination and emergence, obligate outcrossing, and high seed production, and contribute to management challenges.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The evolution of herbicide resistance in Illinois waterhemp populations adds another very challenging obstacle for effective management.\u00a0Recently, many have sent questions and concerns regarding the inability to control waterhemp with various post-emergence soybean herbicides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3134 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/montysplantfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/blog-post-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"blog post\" width=\"353\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/montysplantfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/blog-post-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/montysplantfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/blog-post.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A description of herbicide resistance in Illinois waterhemp populations, along with post-emergence <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">herbicide options to control\u00a0waterhemp, follows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Prior to the evolution of herbicide resistance in waterhemp, ALS-, PPO-, EPSPS- and GS-inhibiting herbicides controlled waterhemp post-emergence in soybean.\u00a0 Resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides (such as Raptor and Classic), first confirmed in Illinois during the mid-1990s, has become so widespread that this class of herbicides is largely considered functionally ineffective against waterhemp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Resistance to PPO-inhibiting herbicides (such as Flexstar, Cobra, and Ultra Blazer) was first identified in Adams County in 2001, and the first instance of resistance to the EPSPS-inhibiting herbicide glyphosate (Roundup, etc.) was confirmed in Fayette County in 2006.\u00a0 To date, no instance of waterhemp resistance to the GS-inhibiting herbicide glufosinate (Liberty, Interline, Cheetah) has been reported.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Figure 1 shows the range expansion of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp from 2012\u20132015.\u00a0 These data are based on samples submitted to the University of Illinois for resistance verification with molecular marker assays.\u00a0 Figure 2, using the same data source as Figure 1, shows the current range of PPO-resistant waterhemp in Illinois.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">It should not be assume<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3135\" src=\"https:\/\/montysplantfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/blog-post-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"blog post 2\" width=\"349\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/montysplantfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/blog-post-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/montysplantfood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/blog-post-2.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/>d that resistance does not occur in non-shaded counties; a better interpretation is simply that we have yet to test a positive sample from those counties.\u00a0 In other words, it is altogether likely resistance to glyphosate and PPO inhibitors occurs in all Illinois counties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Waterhemp resistant to PPO-inhibiting herbicide can be controlled with glyphosate, and glyphosate-resistant waterhemp can be controlled by PPO-inhibiting herbicides.\u00a0 However, there are no effective herbicide options to control waterhemp resistant to both glyphosate and PPO inhibitors in conventional or glyphosate-resistant soybean va<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">rieties. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned previously, ALS-inhibiting herbicides are ineffective, and 2,4-DB will not improve control.\u00a0 Inter-row cultivation or hand removal represent two options to control multiple-resistant waterhemp.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">It remains very unlikely that a herbicide with a novel site of action will be commercialized in the foreseeable future. At the same time, the frequency of multiple resistant waterhemp will only increase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Many eagerly anticipate the ability to apply 2,4-D or dicamba to new herbicide-resistant soybean varieties, but the long-term utility of these herbicides to control multiple-resistant waterhemp will be compromised without thoughtful and implemented stewardship practices.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u9605\u8bfb\u5168\u6587\u8bf7\u70b9\u51fb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.no-tillfarmer.com\/articles\/5840-post-emergence-options-for-controlling-waterhemp-in-soybeans-deu#sthash.jsOoylNU.dpuf\">\u8fd9\u91cc<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><em>Comments by Joe Dedman VP of Agronomy for Monty\u2019s Plant Food Company:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>Water Hemp is becoming a very serious problem in many of the Mid-Atlantic States, there is no new chemistry in the near future that can attack some of this resistance building up among this weed species.\u00a0 That\u2019s why farmers and dealers must begin to mix and use 2 to 3 different modes of action along with adding Monty\u2019s Nanoboost chemical additive to penetrate much more chemical into the weed to help overcome some of this resistance. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>Nanoboost is a very special adjuvant\/penetrant that boosts chemical absorption higher than any other product on the market, and all of this benefit without (heating) or burning the plant tissue.\u00a0 It does not change the chemical makeup of the chemical or batch of chemicals it is being added too, it just grabs and takes more chemistry into the weed to overtake its growing mechanism and produce faster take down and total kill of the weed.<\/em><\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>June 16, 2016\u00a0| Posted in\u00a0Crop Protection Source:\u00a0University of Illinois Extension By Aaron Hager, Extension Weed Scientist Waterhemp continues to be one of the most widespread and troublesome broadleaf weed species with which farmers must contend.\u00a0 Factors related to the species\u2019 biology, such as prolonged germination and emergence, obligate outcrossing, and high seed production, and contribute&hellip;<\/p>","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3133","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-montys-blog"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
